you've taken an OCD training... Now what?
Imagine trying to learn how to ride a bike without ever actually riding a bike. You learn all about the bicycle’s mechanics– the different parts, the physics that make riding a bike possible. You even learn the best way to pedal and address issues that might arise while riding bikes. You might even be able to explain to others how to ride a bike.
But until you get on a bike to apply that knowledge, you can’t really say that you know how to ride a bike.
Being an OCD therapist is similar to learning to ride a bike. While didactic training plays an important role in teaching the theoretical foundations and basic frameworks for Exposure and Response Prevention, clinicians often are left still feeling unsure and in need of guidance.
OCD Therapist Gym
The OCD Therapist Gym is here to meet that need. It is designed to help clinicians hone their skills through experiential learning. Participants will have a chance to practice skills central to effective treatment in real time through hands-on methods like role-plays and reading “mock” session transcripts. Participants will also have the opportunity to provide, receive, and implement feedback from peers and the instructor to further develop their skills.
Before OCD Therapist Gym
- You still feel unsure of what to do in sessions, even though you've taken trainings
- You get nervous when you start working with a client with an unfamiliar OCD presentation
- You've gone to consultation groups, but there's a disconnect when you try to apply the feedback in session
- You (and your clients) feel stuck at a plateau and don't know where to go next
After OCD Therapist Gym
- Become an OCD specialist through experiential and hands-on learning where you see the didactic trainings come to life
- Never again wonder "What exposures should I do for XYZ type of OCD?"
- Maximize the power of ERP for your clients' benefit
- Have a solid grasp on case conceptualization so you have a better sense of clinical direction when you feel stuck
What you can expect from the OCD Therapist Gym
Each week focuses on a different aspect of OCD treatment. Each participant will have opportunities to practice these skills in a hands-on way. Because these are closed-groups, limited to four participants, the Gym is a nonjudgmental and collaborative space where you can try new approaches, make mistakes, and grow as a clinician.
Case conceptualization
Instead of focusing only on the surface symptoms, you'll learn how to "see the forest for the trees." You'll be better equipped to effectively help your clients with multiple themes.
Applying ERP effectively
ERP can be powerful, but if it's not addressing the underlying processes that fuel OCD, then your clients might not be getting the most out of treatment! You'll get hands-on practice with identifying and conducting exposures, supporting response prevention, and targeting the OCD processes that keep our clients stuck.
Personalized feedback
Part of learning is receiving and providing constructive feedback. Getting feedback will allow you to build on their strengths and clarify gaps in their knowledge in order to identify areas of growth. Providing feedback helps you clarify and consolidate your own understanding of OCD and ERP.
Treatment Planning like a Pro
A powerful tool like ERP is less helpful if you're using it on the wrong target. If you know what to look for when beginning treatment with a client, you will feel more clear about how to address their obstacles.
Troubleshooting Treatment Barriers
As OCD clinicians, we can sometimes forget to pull upon our therapeutic skillset when working with clients. You'll have a chance to learn about and practice interventions to address treatment ambivalence, depression, co-occurring anxiety disorders, and family accommodation.
Nonjudgmental Space
It takes a lot of courage to try new things and make mistakes. I purposely designed this course to be small because I believe that learning happens best when people feel comfortable enough to mess up.
About the Instructor
I’ve been an OCD specialist for over five years, having worked with clients at nearly all levels of care. I’ve been in your shoes! While working at an IOP and PHP for individuals with OCD and anxiety disorders, I learned about quality OCD treatment from books, articles, and presentations. After I branched out on my own, I attended additional trainings and consultation groups through the IOCDF, NOCD, and the Cognitive Behavioral Institute. But I’ve always learned best through experience. Throughout my professional career, I have had the opportunity to coach other clinicians on OCD treatment. Some of them had little to no experience working with clients with OCD. Many of them have gone on to become OCD specialists. I’m thrilled to provide this opportunity to more and more therapists.
